What does the service do?

We are an Academic Learning and Student Advice Service.  We offer extensive experience in assisting students  who experience difficulties with aspects of their academic tasks.  As an important part of our role, we provide special advice and services to students with specific Learning Disabilities such as Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADD/ADHD and conditions of Asperger Syndrome.  We also offer specific and specialists services to students with a range of disabilities e.g. Hearing Impairment, Visual Impairment and other physical/medical disabilities.

 

Who can use the service?

Any student registered with the University who is seeking advice relating to individual study/learning issues. 

Such concerns might focus on organization and the management academic writing, note taking, worries about exams, dealing with reading material.  We also offer a range of services to students who may or may not be registered with the Academic Advising/Disabilities Liaison Unit.  Your issue may not be serious to merit visiting us.  However the fact that you are concerned about them means that we will respond.  We understand that some student are striving for excellence, equity and acceptance and we are well placed to offer support and guidance whatever your level of progress.  We can direct you to other support services at the University if we are unable to meet your needs directly.

 

Is this a walk in service?

Not really. When you come into the Office of the A.A.D.L.U you will be greeted by the Clerical Assistant, upon which you will asked to fill out a simple form and to make an appointment. We are open Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m— 4:30 p.m

 

How can the AADLU help me if I am experiencing study difficulties or if my disability limits me?

If you are experiencing study difficulties  we can:-

* Listen to your concerns, discuss these with you and offer advice about how you might deal with them.

* Talk to you about your learning profile and advise you on whether further specialist assessment is available

* Carry out initial screening assessment to help you understand your individual learning profile

* Offer you feedback and advise based on your individual learning profile

 

What can the AADLU do for me if my screening suggests that my problems may be due to Dyslexia or another learning related issue ?

In these cases the AADLU can arrange for you to have an Educational Psychologist Assessment or advise on an assessment by another suitable practitioner.

 

If I have a specific disability how can the AADLU help me?

After guidance …..for an assessment of your specific disability and the …….limitations.

We can provide a ……….assessment which will …..adjustments (accommodations) that will help you access your course of study and meet your exam requirements, i.e. Physical Access Issues.
