| About
the Centre
The
Centre for Gender and Development Studies, founded in September
1993, seeks to promote teaching, research and outreach
activities in gender-related issues by:
 |
Offering interdisciplinary
courses in gender and development across faculties
within the University of the West Indies, at both
undergraduate and post-graduate level. |
|
Initiating
collaborative research projects that
address the relationship of gender to all areas of
society. |
|
Pursuing
a programme of outreach activities that
includes seminars, workshops and networking events. |
Located
on the three campuses of the University of the West Indies
- Mona, Jamaica; Cave Hill, Barbados; and St. Augustine,
Trinidad - the Centre has its origins in the tri-campus Women
and Development Studies Group. The Centre for Gender
and Development Studies is regional in scope, with a Regional
Co-ordinating Unit located at the UWI Mona Campus, Jamaica,
and headed by Professor Barbara Bailey. Professor Elsa
Leo-Rhynie, also of the Mona Campus, holds the Chair in
Gender and Development Studies.
The
Head of the St. Augustine Unit of the Centre for Gender
and Development Studies, Professor
Rhoda Reddock, spearheads the mission to support research
on all aspects of gender and feminist scholarship. The
Centre also aims to act as a forum for work by scholars,
artistes and teachers at all levels of the educational
system, as well as by organizers from the national, regional
and international community. Centre staff are
always on hand to assist.
An
ongoing activity of the Centre is the weekly Lunchtime
Seminar Series in which local, regional and international
faculty, writers, scholars and activists concerned with
gender-related issues and actions present aspects of their
work. All talks are free and open to the public. Conferences,
video showings, public lectures and workshops are organized
periodically by the Centre.
Facilities at
the Centre include a Seminar Room and a Reading Room. National
and international associates are encouraged to use the
Centre as a base for research, discussion and collaboration.
In keeping with its commitment to both global and national
understanding of gender and development issues, the Centre
hosts a Fulbright Scholar programme for
six month or one-year visits.
