The Department of History, Faculty of Humanities and Education, at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine campus has been organizing a yearlong series of activities to commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Independence in Trinidad and Tobago.

The series entitled In The Fires Of Hope: 50 Years of Independence In Trinidad and Tobago was launched on 26 January 2012. It includes essay and poetry competitions for schools and public lectures throughout various communities in Trinidad and Tobago (Port of Spain, Arima, Caroni, San Fernando and Tobago). The grande finale of these activities will be a 3 day international conference from the 13-15 September 2012.

This conference is designed to investigate all facets of the theme of Independence with emphasis on Trinidad and Tobago. It aims to generate new discussion on the changing realities of independent societies by gathering thinkers and academics involved in examining the economic, political, historical, literary and social aspects of our independence from the nascent stages to present day. The conference will explore new perspectives on such issues as the opposition to colonialism, the movement to self rule, the major protagonists in the independence movement, the construction of an independent nation, the new society forged and its challenges, and the impact, successes and failures of political changes.

It will include:  Paper Presentations, Panel Discussion, Film Screenings, Book Exhibits, and more.
