Caribbean Symposium on Population Ageing - Call for Abstracts

The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago, the Division of Ageing of the Ministry of Social Development, Trinidad and Tobago, PAHO and the ECLAC Sub-regional Headquarters for the Caribbean (Trinidad and Tobago), supported by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (New York), are collaborating to convene a three day Caribbean Symposium on Population Ageing.

The symposium specifically aims to:

- Share national best practices and to identify national needs for further support;
- Producing strategy-guidelines to mainstream ageing issues into national development agendas;
- Establishing contacts at the national as well as regional and international level for further collaboration;
- Consolidating the Caribbean’s position on ageing as a follow up to the Second World Assembly on Ageing (Madrid, 2002) and the Regional Intergovernmental Conference on Ageing for Latin America and the Caribbean (Santiago, 2003), where a regional strategy for the implementation of the commitments reached in Madrid has been adopted.
- Identify areas for further research in the area of ageing in the Caribbean

The symposium will take the form of country reports to be presented during the first day and part of the second day. Country delegates will be provided with guidelines for their national statements in order to provide a consistent basis for country comparison and the sharing of experiences. The second day will be dominated by panel discussions on a number of key issues affecting the Elderly, as well as charting the way forward as it relates to the Caribbean’s response on Ageing and the Elderly

The main symposium will be preceded by an academic-symposium. This academic-symposium is geared essentially towards highlighting research presently being done on the issue of ageing and the elderly, looking specifically at implications for the Region. This latter symposium will be a Research Symposium which will highlight the areas in which further research is needed, and possible funding sources for the areas so identified. The research papers presented will be compiled for publication at a later date.
