Amira Jarmakani

Amira

Amira Jarmakani is an Assistant Professor of Women's Studies at Georgia State University. Her areas of specialization include transnational feminisms, visual culture, Arab American studies, as well as literatures of representation and the body. Dr. Jarmakani has served as a core organizer for AMWAJ: Arab Movement of Women Arising for Justice and she is a member of the Radical Arab Women’s Activist Network
(RAWAN). Recent publications include articles entitled "Mobilizing the Politics of Invisibility in Arab American Feminist Discourse," and "Belly Dancing for Liberation: A Critical Interpretation of Reclamation Rhetoric in the American Belly Dance Community.” Currently, she is writing a book entitled Disorienting America: The Nostalgic Allure of Veils, Harems, and Belly Dancers in U.S. Popular Culture.
