CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE
December 1 st , 2004
Dear Contributor,
One Hundred Not Out! This is our present score.
We are proud of achieving the milestone of awarding 100 bursaries worth $5,000 each to deserving students at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine . We have come a long way from our humble start of 15 in 1992! At the same time we are highly appreciative of the ongoing vital assistance of the private sector and professional bodies which contributed an additional 92 scholarships and bursaries at a cumulative value of $790,000.00. The reward of all is the appreciation of the recipients and their parents!
You will understand also how gratified we are by the growing popularity of our annual UWI Carnival Fete which remains our major source of funding for achieving our raison d'etre of providing financial assistance for a growing number of bright young minds getting ready to make their contribution to society.
As you are aware the University has embarked on a phased expansion in student enrollment. The logical corollary is that the greater number of students the greater the number who will need financial assistance. So whereas we are doing very well a proactive approach recognizes the need for increased support to enhance our capital base to be better prepared for the expected.
During the year under review the Board was saddened by the untimely passing of one of our Board members. Mr. Russell Tesheira, whose energy and contributions will be missed. May he rest in peace.
I close by acknowledging PricewaterhouseCoopers, our honorary auditors, for their ongoing assistance. I also thank our hard working Committee members for their effort, ideas and support as we pursue our objective of assisting the University.
