Certificate Programme in Geographic and Land Information Systems Management

Objectives of the Programme

  • To enhance the capability of participants in the development and use of GIS/LIS concepts and technology.
  • To provide participants with the working knowledge required in the acquisition, preparation and management of geospatial data.
  • To develop a core of trained GIS/LIS personnel who can provide support for GIS/LIS projects throughout the Caribbean.

Target Groups

  • Those engaged in GIS/LIS development and implementation in both the public and private sectors.
  • Professionals - surveyors, engineers, planners, geographers, agriculturists and all others who are interested in the use, development, and management of GIS/LIS.

Conditions for Entry

  • Passes in at least five (5) O level GCE/CXC subjects, including English Language and Mathematics or an equivalent qualification.
  • Applicants must also be computer literate, as knowledge of MS Windows operating system will be required.
  • Preference shall be given to matured applicants already employed in related fields.

Length of the Programme

This certificate programme will be offered over one calendar year, using a mix of part-time and full-time studies. Each candidate is expected to register and pass a total of seven courses in order to be awarded the certificate.

Nature of Instruction

The programme will be delivered using a series of short, intensive, instructional periods. It will comprise of six, one-week modules of lectures, tutorials and demonstrations, at the end of which there would be a four-week project module.

Nature of Assessment

With the exception of GLIS 0473, which shall be assessed as a 100% coursework, all other courses shall be assessed as follows:

  • Final examination: 70% and assessed assignments: 30%.
