Semi-
Lime Series
The
Semi-Lime Series is one of the outreach programmes of the Centre
for Creative and Festival Arts, University of the West Indies,
St. Augustine, Trinidad. It
is designed to facilitate the exchange of ideas between researchers/practitioners
and a cross-section of students, faculty, and the general public
in an informal setting as part of the process of demystifying
the notion of the university as an ivory tower.

The
name Semi-Lime has been derived from the
university-type seminar and the corner-lime/rap
session/banter so quintessentially Trinidadian
that Derek Walcott has been inspired to
rename it the "Limers' Republic."
Semi-Lime
is held on the evening of the first Friday
of the month (when the University is in session). During
the first hour (the proceedings of which are
recorded for the benefit of future researchers)
the guest of the month addresses the audience
and fields questions on his/her chosen subject. After
this, he/she retires with members of the audience
who may so desire to continue the discussion
over drinks and snacks donated by patrons of
the Semi-Lime.
Some of our past guests include Laurence Carrington (linguist),
Bridget Brereton (historian), Chalkdust (calypsonian), David
Rudder (calypsonian), Leroy Clarke (artist and poet), Sam Selvon
(novelist), Garth St. Omar (novelist), James Isaiah Boodhoo (painter
and novelist), Kim Johnson (journalist), and Pamela Franco (post-graduate
student).
Semi-Lime
is coordinated by Dr. Funso Aiyejina, Lecturer,
Department of Liberal Arts, Faculty of
Humanities and Education, The University
of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad.
