France as a Country
France is the largest country in Western Europe (almost one fifth of the total area of the European Union), with a vast maritime zone (exclusive economic zone extending over 11 million sq. km).
France has 63.8 million inhabitants (2008) which makes it the second most populated country in the EU with a density of 98.1 inhabitants per sq. km.
France has 57 urban areas with over 100,000 inhabitants.
The French Republic is made up of:
- Mainland France, divided into 22 regions and subdivided into 96 departments;
- Four overseas departments (DOM): Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyane (French Guiana) and Réunion;
- Seven overseas territories: French Polynesia, Wallis and Futuna, Mayotte, Saint Pierre and Miquelon and the French Southern and Antarctic Territories, Saint-Barthélémy, Saint-Martin;
- One territory with special status: New Caledonia.
The French Language
French remains a vital language for a number of reasons including:
- It is widely spoken on all continents and in many countries, by approximately 200 million people, as a native tongue, a language of instruction, and/or an official language;
- It is the language of diplomacy at the UN (beside English) and of important international organizations such as the EU;
- It is one of the most important languages of the internet.
The French community in Trinidad and Tobago
Approximately 600 French nationals are living in Trinidad and Tobago and more are coming each year. There is even a small French International School catering for the French-speaking community’s children.
The French Association Un côté français in Trinidad and Tobago organizes monthly gatherings and regular activities.
You want to know more about France? Easy! Many French cultural events are organised by the Alliance Française.
The French Business Community
Trinidad and Tobago is host to quite many French companies including such big names as BOUYGUES CONSTRUCTION (the Waterfront Project) and VINCI (CRH/UBH Interchange).
Trindad and Tobago has recently chosen Bouygues Construction, Alstom, and RATP to develop its railway system.
The Self-Access Facility
If you are a language student, go to SAF. There, you can have access to a wide range of French materials at all levels (CDs, CD-Roms, videos, grammar and vocabulary books, tests, tourism guides, etc.).
All these materials have to be consulted in SAF only. No loans are allowed. It is free of charge.
Opening hours: 8:00 am – 6:00 pm (Monday & Wednesday)
8:00 am – 5:00 pm (Tuesday & Thursday)
8:00 am – 4:30 pm (Friday)
9:00 am – 3:00 pm (Saturday)
