The Centre for Language Learning (CLL) was established in 1997 to enable students
and staff at the University of the West Indies St. Augustine
to develop proficiency in a foreign language.
In the ten years of our existence, the number of languages
on offer has grown. In addition to Spanish and French, the
two most popular languages, students, staff and members of
the public can begin to learn a variety of new languages,
some of which are taught nowhere else in the country. We offer
courses in Arabic, (Mandarin) Chinese, French, German, Hindi,
Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, and Yoruba. English
as a Foreign Language is also taught to international students
and professionals.
Although our courses emphasise oral and aural competence,
learners are able to develop all four skills - speaking, listening,
reading and writing - to be immersed in the culture of a language
and to gain an understanding of its grammar. Our teachers
are native speakers or very proficient non-native speakers
who make language learning interesting and enjoyable.
With its state-of-the-art facilities; small, highly interactive
classes; dynamic staff and supportive learning environment,
the CLL invites you to embark on a journey of a lifetime.
Learn a new language or improve the one that you already know.
For business, for pleasure, for your studies, for your life,
join the adventure—learn a language. Welcome aboard!!
