The Academic Advising Programme

The convenor of the Academic Advising Programme (AAP) is Dr. Elizabeth Walcott-Hackshaw. Several full-time and part-time members of staff are involved in this dynamic programme. The programme is relatively new, having started in 1997, and it is of great interest and benefit to students and lecturers alike.

The aim of the AAP is to create an environment outside of the classroom where student and lecturer can work together to effectively manage the student's degree programme. In such an environment, the student would receive the necessary support needed to achieve goals, identify problems and recover quickly from those problems. Contact outside the classroom would help instil confidence in the student, track the student's performance and help produce a student not only with academic skills, but also with the analytical skills to work through and manage personal and career challenges.

In order to make the most of the programme, students should therefore see their Advisors within the first four weeks of the semester, and again in the 10th and 11th weeks (before the beginning of the Examination period).

In general, timing is essential to the Advising process. As students enter the University - within the first week of the first semester - they need to be informed of the Academic Advising Programme by their respective Section. Throughout the rest of the semester, a structured timetable should be followed in order to gain maximum benefit. Sessions can be arranged for both one-on-one or group meetings with Advisors, depending on the students' needs and interests.
