Some Milestones:

1960

The University of the West Indies expanded with the establishment of a College of Arts and Science at the Cave Hill Campus. At the St. Augustine Campus, the College of Arts and Science was also established on the site of what had originally been the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture.

1964

The College of Arts and Sciences was organized into four Divisions; Humanities, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences and Mathematics.

1970s

A system of Challenge Examinations was introduced, in which students from non-Campus countries who fulfilled the University’s matriculation requirements could pursue all or some courses of the first year of the B.A. degree programme in their home country. Successful students could then apply for entry to complete the B.A. degree at any of the three UWI Campuses. The system of Challenge Examinations was later absorbed by the University Distance Teaching Enterprise (UWIDITE).

1972

In 1972 there was an amalgamation of a Faculty of Arts and a Faculty of General Studies to form a single Faculty of Arts and General Studies. The Division of Humanities was reorganized into the Department of English and the Department of French and Spanish. 1972 also saw the birth of the Department of History, which was previously under the Division of Social Sciences.

1975

The Department of English and the Department of French and Spanish were amalgamated to form the Department of Language and Linguistics.

The Faculty was overseen by a Campus Dean and a University Dean.

1996

The Faculty of Arts and General Studies and the Faculty of Education were joined together to form the Faculty of Humanities and Education (FHE). The FHE was made up of two Schools; School of Humanities and School of Education. The Faculty offered both Bachelor of Arts degrees and Bachelor of Education degrees.

UWIDITE evolved into the University Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC).

2006

The FHE launched a B.A. Film Programme.

2010

FHE offered a Certificate in Journalism.

2013

The Department of Liberal Arts was divided into two new departments; the Department of Literary, Cultural and Communication Studies and the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics.
