The School of Graduate Studies and Research
The School for Graduate Studies and Research at St. Augustine continues to foster curiosity driven, needs-related
and applied research, while emphasizing the building of university-wide themes of excellence in nine focal areas.
Graduate studies at The University of the West Indies (UWI) can be undertaken in the form of taught courses
or research. The principal research degrees are Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
Research degrees contain a taught element. The intention of these courses is to provide students with research
techniques and skills that will not only help them to complete their current research topic, but strengthen their
practical application skills for life after university.
