The Avian and Exotics Unit is a part of the Clinical Veterinary Sciences Department at the School of Veterinary Medicine. This unit provides medical care for a variety of exotic and non-domestic animals including exotic birds, backyard poultry, reptiles (e.g snakes, lizards, turtles, tortoises), non-human primates, rabbits, rodents (e.g. guinea pigs, hamsters and squirrels) as well as other exotic animal species.

Our clinical services comprise:

  • Consultations  (exotic pets, rabbit & backyard poultry farmers)       
  • Advice on Exotic Pet Care and Nutrition
  • Dental procedures
  • Beak and nail trimming
  • Ultrasonography
  • Radiography
  • Laboratory Testing – parasitology, microbiology and so on
  • Surgical procedures
  • Reproductive Issues such as Egg binding
  • Other Procedures offered include:
    • Avian Sexing for most exotic bird species
    • Minor consultations on fish species as requested.

Our clinical service as well as in-house animals also provide our Veterinary students with much needed exposure to Avian and Exotic patients during their clinical rotations.
