Entry Requirements

Admission Criteria

The number of qualified applicants to The UWI-SVM greatly exceeds the number of available places. Thus, admission is highly competitive. Because of this, we cannot offer admission to all students with impressive academic and personal records.

5-Year DVM

Prior to matriculation at The UWI-SVM, you should have completed the programmes which, in your home country, would have prepared you for entrance to a university in that country.  For Caribbean students this means that you must have attained passes in at least five (5) subjects at CSEC (CXC) General Proficiency (Grades I or II and from 1998 Grade III) or approved equivalents, which must include English Language and Mathematics.

You should also sit for national external examinations and submit your scores for those examinations as part of your credentials for admission to The UWI-SVM:

  • Passes at CAPE Level (I & II) in Chemistry and Biology/Zoology and one other subject, or approved equivalents e.g. GCE A-levels, German Abitur, French Baccalauréat and International Baccalaureate. If the third subject is not Physics, this must have been passed at CSEC (CXC) O-level or approved equivalent.
  • Pure Science Degree from a university acceptable to the University of the West Indies
  • Successful completion of at least one year of a three year Pure Science Degree from a university acceptable to the University of the West Indies
  • The Pre-Health Professions Certificate from the University of the West Indies with a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • The triple major Associate degree from Barbados Community College with a GPA of 3.0 or greater
  • The Associate degree in Natural Sciences from Jamaica College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE) with a GPA of 2.5 or greater

6-Year DVM - Pre Veterinary (Pre-Health Professions Programme)

Entrants into this programme will have usually completed 12 years of primary and secondary schooling with a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in English, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Biology.  Alternatively candidates should have 5 Ordinary-level CSEC (CXC) passes in the same subjects – grades I or II and from 1998 grade III – or European equivalents.

Consideration will also be given to students transferring from other fields to the health profession.

Upon satisfactory completion of the 12 month (3-semester) pre-veterinary course, students are guaranteed a place in the 5-Year DVM Programme.  For a course listing click here

Proficiency in English

Since English is the language of instruction at The UWI-SVM, it is essential that you demonstrate competence in the language. You must be able to understand rapid, idiomatic Standard English as spoken in the classroom, have the ability to express thoughts quickly and clearly in both spoken and written English, and read the language with ease. This proficiency must be achieved before you are admitted. If your native language is not English, the University requires that you submit the results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) as evidence that your English proficiency is satisfactory for study at The UWI-SVM.
