Mathematics
Mathematicians help other people to solve their problems by formulating and solving mathematical models of the problems. For instance, they may help engineers to model the flow of oil through the soil in order to figure out how best to get it out of the soil; or help a businessman to work out the fastest way to deliver his goods to his customers; or become actuaries and make a lot of money. Our department would like to help people of all ages and abilities share in the excitement of mathematics and understand the vast range and importance of its application to science and commerce. We aim to change people's attitudes to mathematics and to show the vital contribution of mathematics to reshaping the everyday world.
Computer Science
Computer Science is one of the most popular and exciting fields of study today. The information industry is vibrant and ever changing and provides many opportunities for both research and commercial endeavors. We teach students how to program computers, how the various components of of computer systems work and the fundamental principles they need in order to understand both current and emerging computer related technologies. The successful student of computer science leaves with an understanding of computers and computer related technologies. Graduates can use their knowledge to start their own business or to become valued employees in companies that use information technology. Our graduates work on everything from computing taxes to building e-business applications. A few of the brighter ones catch the bug and stay on at the university to create new knowledge and techniques for future students to learn about.
