The
Teaching Laboratory accommodates a maximum of forty-eight
students and contains the basic equipment for conducting
undergraduate practical classes. In the Research Laboratories
there are microfuges, bench top centrifuges, a mid-speed
refrigerated centrifuge, an ultracentrifuge, a lyophilizer,
fraction collector, UV-visible spectrophotometers, gel electrophoresis
apparatus, water baths, incubators and other basics.
Research
is currently focussed on investigations into the biological
effects of extracts from local 'medicinal' plants, the incidence
and nature of MODY (maturity-onset diabetes of the young)
in the Caribbean region, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase
activity in the local diabetic population and specific aspects
of the blood-clotting process, with particular reference
to the role of plasminogen.
