Introduction

The Department of Physics offers opportunites for postgraduate studies leading to MPhil and PhD degrees by research and thesis, in an existing range of potential research areas.

The MPhil and PhD programmes are essentially research degrees, but nine credits of MSc level taught courses are also required. Students with a BSc degree normally register for an MPhil programme and may, if progress is satisfactory, be considered for upgrade to PhD after the first year. Students may select the topic for their project from one of the research areas of interest in the Department. These include Material Science, Medical Physics, Environmental Physics, Solar Energy, Quantum Optics, Astronomy, Acoustics and Electronics.
