Centre for Gender and Development Studies
(CGDS)
The Centre has its origins in the work of
the Women and Development Studies Groups,
UWI, and was established in September 1993.
It is regional in scope, with its regional
co-ordinating unit located at UWI, Mona, Jamaica.
The Centre is committed to a programme of
teaching, research and outreach which seeks
to question, challenge and understand the
social relationship of gender in the Caribbean.
The MPhil/PhD Programme is a significant
contribution to the Centre's aim to provide
an integrated, interdisciplinary programme
of gender and development studies across faculties
and disciplines at The University of the West
Indies.
The MPhil/PhD programme aims to provide graduate
students with the skills and the resources
through which they can deepen the academic
discourse on Caribbean feminism and contribute
to the development of an indigenous body of
theory, knowledge and research for the Caribbean.
This in turn should contribute to an improved
quality of life for women and men of the region.
