2008
The Health Economics Unit (HEU) in collaboration with Guardian Life of the Caribbean hosted a Panel Discussion entitled “Are You Ready For Retirement?” April 23rd, 2008 at the Faculty of Social Sciences Lounge. It sought to address the socio economic and developmental implications of ageing and retirement in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean.
2007
The Health Economics Unit coordinated a workshop entitled, “Responding to the legal ethical and human rights challenges of HIV and AIDS in the Caribbean.” May 15th - 17th, 2007 at the Cascadia Hotel in Trinidad. The goal of this workshop, in keeping with the overall aim of the PANCAP Law, Ethics and Human Rights Project (LEHR) and the CRN+ GFATM is to consolidate the regional response to the legal, ethical and human rights challenges of HIV/AIDS in the countries of the Caribbean region and to further the development of a supporting environment for national and regional responses to the epidemic.
2004
The Health Economics Unit organized and co-hosted the first Caribbean Symposium on Population Ageing, in Port-of-Spain from 8-10 November. This was done in collaboration with, the Division for Ageing of the Ministry of Social Development, The ECLAC Subregional Headquarters for the Caribbean (Trinidad and Tobago), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Merck Sharpe & Dome Foundation and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The main objective of this symposium was to lend support to governments in the Caribbean in their efforts to mainstream ageing and the concerns of older persons into national development frameworks. The government forum, was convened at the Cascadia Hotel November 9-10 and was preceded by a one-day academic research symposium arranged at ECLAC.
Representation from the various international and regional bodies included the following: Pan American Health Organization, United Nations Development Programme delegates, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and various ministries and Non-Governmental organizations in the Caribbean, Florida International University, University of Suriname, UWI Mona, Local representation included personnel from various ministries, members of various medical boards and insurance companies - November 2004.
2002
The HEU organized and hosted media workshop entitled, “HIV/AIDS and the Media: Planning the way ahead:” One day workshop for media persons to begin the process of developing a strategic framework on terms of reference which will guide the media’s response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic – Grafton Beach Resort, Tobago – April 2002.
The HEU in collaboration with the Department of Behavioural Sciences became involved in the organization of an Open Panel Discussion on the multidisciplinary Impact of the HIV/AIDS Epidemic -With a Focus on the Implications of the Social Worker- Paper presented on the Economic Impact of HIV/AIDS and the impact on the Labour Force - Engineering Room 101 UWI St. Augustine - March 2002.
The HEU in collaboration with the Business Office UWI St. Augustine became involved in the launching of the HIV/AIDS Response Programme (HARP) on the St. Augustine Campus.-Hilton Hotel - February 2002

2000
The Health Economics Unit hosted an International Health Sector Reform Conference entitled, “Health Sector Reform: Sharing our Experiences, collaborating on the way forward” held on June 2-3 2000. Representation from the various international bodies included the following: The World bank, Pan American Health Organization, World Health Organization, United Nations Development Program delegates, InterAmerican Development Bank, the Caribbean Epidemiology Center, CARICOM Secretariat and Ministries of Health from various Caribbean countries. Local representation included personnel from the Ministry of Health, Trinidad and Tobago, members of various medical boards, insurance companies.
1998
The Health Economics Unit hosted a successful seminar on “Pension Reform in the English speaking Caribbean Lessons from the experience of Chile and the rest of Latin America.” This seminar was held at the La Joya Complex St. Joseph March 1998.
