Introduction

Mathematicians help other people to solve their problems by formulating and solving mathematical models of the problems. For instance, they may help engineers to model the flow of oil through the soil in order to figure out how best to get it out of the soil, help a businessman to work out the fastest way to deliver his goods to his customers, or become actuaries and make a lot of money. Our Department would like to help people of all ages and abilities share in the excitement of mathematics, and understand the vast range and importance of its application to science and commerce. We aim to change people's attitudes to mathematics, and to show the vital contribution of mathematics to reshaping the everyday world.
