Sick Leave

ARTICLE 9 - Collective Agreement between OWTU and The UWI
(i) (a) Permanent members of staff and staff on contract for one (1)
year and more shall be entitled to a maximum of twenty-one
(21) calendar days sick leave per year with pay upon the
submission of a certificate from a medical practitioner, provided
that such leave for a period of two (2) working days or less need
not be so certified.


(b) Staff temporarily employed with The University and who have
been so employed for at least three (3) months shall be entitled
to a maximum of seven (7) calendar days sick leave with pay,
upon the submission of a certificate from a medical practitioner,
provided that such leave for a period of two (2) working days or
less need not be so certified.


(c) Permanent Part time staff on contract for one (1) year and more
shall be entitled to sick leave in accordance with Letter of
Understanding No. 3 - Appendix IV.

 

(ii) An employee who is prevented from reporting for duty by illness, shall
notify his/her Head of Department via letter or messenger on his/her
first day of absence or as soon as possible thereafter.


(iii) If whilst on vacation leave, a member of staff becomes ill and such
illness is certified as provided herein, his/her vacation leave ceases
from the first day of illness. If the number of days of illness ends
before the expiration of the vacation leave the balance of vacation
leave may, to suit the exigencies of the department, be taken later.


(iv) In cases of prolonged illness where sick leave entitlement is
exhausted, a permanent member of staff shall, upon the approval of
The University’s Finance Committee and on the recommendation of
The University’s Medical Officer or a member of The University’s Panel
of Doctors or such other Medical Officer as the Finance Committee
may approve, be allowed additional sick leave with full pay for a
period not exceeding six months in the first instance. If thereafter the
member of staff is certified to be still unfit for duty, he/she shall be
granted a further extension of sick leave on full pay at the discretion
of The University’s Finance Committee.
