The Safety Office
The
Office of the Safety Officer falls under the Registrar’s
office. The current holder of the position is Mr.
Yandesh Parasramsingh, a graduate of the St. Augustine
campus.
The
Safety Officer is appointed as the competent person to
assist The University in its management of Occupational
Health and Safety on campus. He reports to the Campus
Registrar through the Estate Manager and is duty bound
to give impartial and objective advice consistent with
statutory requirements.
The main functions of the Safety Office are: -
- Provide
specialist advice to the Vice-Chancellor and Campus
Management on relevant legislation and implementation
of the University's Health and Safety
Policy.
- Advise
and support Deans, Heads, Unit Managers and individuals
on health and safety issues.
- Devise/formulate
and promote relevant guidance to compliance with health
and safety regulation (OSH Act 2004)
- Service
the Campus Safety Committee.
- Monitor
health and safety management and performance of the
University and its
constituent parts through periodic inspections and
audits.
- Investigate
serious accidents and dangerous occurrences.
- Liaise
with health and safety enforcement authorities and
agencies (OHS Dept. Ministry of Labour, EMA, Fire
Services etc.).
- Liaise
with Trade Unions and their representatives on health
and safety issues.
- Promote
and provide occupational health and safety sensitization
through training and
other activities.
- Monitor
reports of accidents and incidents trends and recommend
corrective action for
implementation.
- Training
and support of first-aiders and other safety related
personnel.
- Provision
and maintenance of fire fighting equipment.
- Inspection
of all other safety equipment.
