The work of the IIR concerns teaching and research, as well as the advanced study of international relations of developing countries, in particular Latin America and the Caribbean. Courses emphasize a multidisciplinary approach to the study of International Relations.

Mentorship Programme


Target Groups

IIR Alumni, UN Agencies, Regional Organisations, the Private Sector, the Media and other Non Governmental Organisations

Mission Statement

The IIR Mentorship Programme is aimed at empowering students for effective leadership in global affairs and enhancing their professional capacity by providing direction and guidance through mentorship opportunities and relationships with the alumni, regional organizations, UN agencies, the private sector, the media and other nongovernmental actors.

Objectives


The mentorship programme is aimed at:
  1. Fostering collaboration between the alumni, relevant stakeholders and the IIR for mutual capacity building
  2. Establishing a structure for networking between the alumni and the current student body.
  3. Providing opportunities /work experience to increase students’ ability to function as effective professionals
  4. Increasing internship opportunities for students of the IIR
  5. Reinforcing UWI alumni Association’s relevance for IIR networking

Benefits

The Mentorship Programme will:

  • help students develop personal and professional goals
  • assist students establish short term and long term career plans
  • develop students’ interpersonal skills and self-confidence  
  • build students’ practical knowledge of the job market
  • provide a platform for grooming effective leaders for participating organisations

Suggested Activities

  • Attend activities/functions at mentor’s organisation
  • Attend a business meeting with mentor
  • Tour of the mentor’s organisation/company
  • Discuss career plan with mentor
  • Assist mentor with work related activities (research etc)
  • Attend a social event with mentor (dinner, charity event)
  • Learn about the mentor’s company, role and career path
  • Role play a job interview with mentor
  • Review resume with mentor
  • Have a mentor exchange with another mentee for an event
  • Exchange of professional literature
  • Intern at the mentor’s organisation
