Laboratory Technician I (Grade 6)

Applications are invited for the post of Laboratory Technician I (Grade 6) in the Department of Geography, Faculty of Food and Agriculture.

Duties of the post include:

 

1.     Managing the Department of Geography’s Geographic Information System (GIS) Laboratory, Mapping, and Spatial Analysis Resources.

2.     Supporting research through data preparation.

3.     Providing GIS mapping, cartographic outputs, analysis, and writing reports.

4.     Preparing, scheduling, distributing and monitoring the use and proper handling of equipment while in the field.

5.     Providing support to students in the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) instruments and GIS activities.

6.     Providing guidance to student volunteers or adjunct staff and recording work activities.

7.     Performing basic servicing, calibration and minor repairs to laboratory instruments, and reporting any computing issues for repairs.

8.     Researching and supporting advanced GIS techniques.

9.     Conducting and facilitating workshops, including the preparation of marketing, materials and manuals.

10.  Performing any other related duties as may be assigned by the Chief Technician or the Head of Department.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Applicants should have knowledge and familiarity with the University’s mission, regulations, structure, policies and procedures.  Applicants should have a high level of knowledge and proficiency in the use of GIS Technology including advanced data analysis and at least one computer programming language.  Applicants must have knowledge of SPSS, Linux OS, ArcGIS and Q-GIS, or other relevant open-source tools. Applicants should possess specialized skills in the use of relevant productivity tools, mathematical concepts, data handling, report writing and the ability to develop online mapping applications. Applicants should possess knowledge of laboratory exercises and laboratory safety.

  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

 

Candidates must possess minimum qualifications of at least five (5) GCE ‘O’ Levels or CXC/CSEC (Grades I, II or III from 1998) passes including English Language and Mathematics.

 

Desirable:

A BSc degree in Geography or Geomatics or a relevant Technician’s Diploma or Associate’s Degree/Diploma in Geography, Computing or GIS or equivalent qualifications from any recognized institution.

Experience

Required:

At least two (2) years’ relevant work experience.

Salary will be fixed in accordance with Grade 6 of the salary scale.
