Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate must possess a BSc degree or equivalent from a recognized university in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field.

He/She should also have:


  • Detailed knowledge of the management and administration of the UNIX and Microsoft Windows operating systems
  • Knowledge of computer networking, including network architectures, topologies, protocols, maintenance and troubleshooting, network management
  • Knowledge of the administration of KMS, VPN and PKI solutions
  • Detailed knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite of productivity applications
  • Experience writing technical reports and documentation



Preference will be given to candidates who possess considerable:


  • relevant professional experience
  • experience in a supervisory role



Professional qualification in computer networking or engineering as referenced by certification as an MCSE, MCSA or CCNA would be an asset.


Special Responsibilities


  • Providing technical support to LAN users and other LAN administrators as required
  • User administration for the Campus Area Network (CAN) to coordinate authentication and access to network resources around the Campus 
  • Installing, configuring and maintaining the servers, workstations and peripherals on LANs and on converged infrastructures
  • Resolving systems and network problems on LANs
  • Participating with the Systems Engineers in the systems-related work within the Department, providing technical support as required
  • Ensuring the security and integrity of Campus IT equipment, facilities and infrastructure and the information which they store and manage
  • Contributing to the design of LANs and the CAN, and planning their development
  • Administering policies and standards governing the Campus and University IT infrastructure

  • Be able to work effectively without supervision and to take responsibility for end-to-end delivery to the customer
  • Be able to mentor direct reports and other junior staff to foster and encourage their professional and personal development
  • Have a strong customer focus
  • Have an appreciation of the regional character of the University and of its regional responsibilities
