Fun with Chinese Characters

“Chinese characters are so difficult to write!” “Write? It’s more like drawing!” Well, the Confucius Institute at UWI St. Augustine Campus has planned an engaging workshop to make learning Chinese characters easy and fun! Come and join us at the Chinese Culture Corner where participants will be exposed to the history of Chinese characters through a series of activities (e.g. Jigsaw, It Takes Two, Find It First, etc.) aimed at unveiling effective and enjoyable ways to learning Chinese characters.

Vocabulary Adventure

Ready for brainstorming? This Chinese Culture Corner session provides participants with the opportunity to practice the Mandarin Chinese vocabulary they already know in a fun and inspiring way, as well as to learn some interesting words used in everyday situations. Participants will partake in a number of activities such as “Pictionary” and “Find it First” designed to improve and expand their Mandarin Chinese vocabulary.

Let’s Go Out!

In this session, participants will be introduced to popular places, food and communication and entertainment apps in China. In addition, participants will also get the opportunity to learn and practice Mandarin Chinese expressions related to casual dating and going out with friends such as introducing yourself, asking about someone’s preferences, and settling on a date.

Beijing Treasure Hunt

In this Chinese Culture Corner session, participants will form groups and take part in a Treasure Hunt game. Participants will be introduced to the local food, scenic spots and unique culture elements associated with China’s capital city, Beijing. Each group will follow clues to find hidden objects related to Beijing and accomplish specified tasks, while practicing and improving three major Mandarin Chinese skills; speaking, reading and writing.
