Read below for The UWI St. Augustine’s Wellness Programme's recap of our campus' staff experience at the 18th annual Scotiabank Women Against Breast Cancer 5k 2017 which took place on September 30 under the theme, Every Stride Empowers at the Queen’s Park Savannah.

Members of the campus community showed up in their numbers to participate in the Scotiabank Women Against Breast Cancer 5k 2017 to support the event’s mission –  to help those affected by breast cancer and to increase awareness of the disease by providing mechanisms that would assist in early detection, education and support services.

The University of the West Indies Wellness Programme understands that breast cancer affects the lives of not only patients afflicted with the disease but concerned family members and friends alike. Over the years, members of the Campus community expressed their concern and interest by engaging in individual participation to demonstrate support for the annual 5k. In this regard, the event has generated much interest on campus due in part to the efforts of individual commitment by employees of various departments. With growing support over the years, individual participation evolved into what is now called The UWI corporate team who have proudly exhibited their presence at the event for the past six (6) years.

In 2017, the UWI Wellness Programme alongside the Human Resources Division and The Sport and Physical Education (SPEC) Centre encouraged staff members to support and a total of 31 persons purchased t-shirts valued at a subsidised cost ($60) and paid a registration fee of $100 to participate. This show of support was greatly appreciated and The UWI expects for there to be an even greater turn-out in 2018.
