For Release Upon Receipt - July 30, 2007

St. Augustine

The University of the West Indies Alumni Association (UWIAA), Trinidad and Tobago Chapter has embarked on an overseas internship programme designed to expose students to the cultural, professional and social fabric of their host country during the period of their internship.

The student selected to participate in the inaugural UWI Alumni Apprentice Programme (AAP) is Kezia Bradshaw, a Computer Science and Management Major at the UWI St. Augustine. Vancouver-based energy company, Methanex Corporation, has agreed to partner with the UWIAA (T&T Chapter) in this initiative and has made arrangements to place Miss Bradshaw at their Information Technology Department from July 23rd to August 24th.

During the course of the internship, Ms Bradshaw will be accommodated by the President of the Trinidad and Tobago Cultural Society of British Columbia. From August 25th to 31st, she will be hosted in Ottawa by the High Commission of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago during their Independence Celebrations.

The newly launched AAP is a three to six week programme targeting UWI students who have just completed their second year of full-time study. The UWIAA (T&T Chapter) covers students’ airfare, accommodation and incidental expenses during their placement. The local programme takes pattern from a successful pilot project undertaken by the UWIAA (UK Chapter), in association with the Institutional Advancement Division, in June 2006, with the full support of Prof E. Nigel Harris, UWI Vice Chancellor.

The UWIAA has a total of 16 chapters in UK, Toronto, Florida, Washington DC, New York, Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Belize, BVI, Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Grenada, Montserrat, St Kitts/Nevis and St Lucia.
