As more adults take advantage of the expanded educational opportunities offered and as UWI widens its access and adopts a student centred approach to learning, UWI Open Campus in particular has sought to incorporate Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) or relevant informal and non-formal learning as a means of assessing students and allowing them placement into the university system.
Professor Hazel Simmons-McDonald, formerly Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Education, Cave Hill, Barbados, is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the Open Campus. The PVC has been holding discussions and consulting with a number of stakeholders as she seeks to guide the Open Campus through this period of transition. Professor Simmons-McDonald sees the Open Campus as having a significant role to play in extending the range and scope of educational offerings to people in the UWI 12 countries and in remote communities. She has expressed the view that if the UWI Open Campus can achieve the strategic objectives set for it in UWI’s current strategic plan, it will contribute in a significant way to the development of human capital in the region.
