The ANSA McAL Psychological Research Centre has been a major pioneer of the growth of Psychology within the Caribbean region. Spearheaded by its first Director, Professor Ramesh Deosaran, the Centre was formally opened in May 1989 and is a research unit of the Department of Behavioural Sciences in the Faculty of Social Sciences, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine. Since then, it has initiated the B.Sc. Psychology Major and Special programmes at The UWI, as well as the M.Phil./Ph.D. in Psychology and the M.Sc. in Applied Psychology.
The Centre has provided support to numerous academic staff and students in Psychology and related disciplines, as well as undertaken several research projects, surveys, conferences, lectures, seminars, and workshops. The Centre’s numerous publications, including books and journal articles on a range of social and psychological issues, reflect the contributions of the Centre to these fields. Additionally, various reports and policy proposals prepared by the Centre have been submitted to policy makers in Trinidad and Tobago, and other countries in order to inform decision-making and have an impact on society at large.
The Centre regularly liaises with local organisations as well as institutions in the Caribbean, North America, and Europe to explore various psychological issues.
