Welcome to the University of the West Indies Research Expo website.

In October 2013, the UWI, St. Augustine Campus hosted a Research Expo over a four day period with line up items including a wide range of exhibits all of which a symposium, mini workshops, mini concert, market place and children’s fun park, to display the multi-faceted talents and research projects of staff and students from varying fields and disciplines.                              

Opened to the public and free of charge, this was a transformative, informational event. This Expo aimed to demonstrate the research of the UWI St. Augustine Campus by highlighting the various projects, current achievements and technologies explored by staff and students. There was an array of events from scientific displays, special tours, film screenings, book readings and many more educational and fun filled activities.

World Cocoa and Chocolate Day

JFK Auditorium, Tuesday 1st October, 2013

cocoaThe UWI Research Expo kicked-off with a day filled with everything chocolate from showcasing the premium, dark Trinitario chocolates, to learning about the rich history of cocoa estates and the legacy of chocolate making in Trinidad and Tobago. Visitors had the opportunity to learn about our Cocoa Research Centre’s pioneering work, enjoyed a variety of chocolate products from local entrepreneurs (truffles, ice-creams, blended wines, butter soaps, etc.) as well as participated in chocolate-based culinary competitions and chocolate making courses.

UWI Symposium on Research, Enterprise & Impact

image The UWI-Trinidad and Tobago Research and Development Impact Fund (RDI Fund) hosted its first Symposium on “Research, Enterprise and Impact” which featured UWI projects that have impacted on society in ways that extend beyond the traditional academic outputs. It brought together representatives from a diverse range of organizations that are partners in the research, knowledge exchange and development process with a view to strengthening linkages between academia, industry, government and civil society.

UWI Research Expo

JFK Quadrangle and Auditorium, 3rd to 5th October, 2013
(Thur & Frid: 9:00am-5:00pm; Sat:10:00am-3pm)

turbineThe Campus’ most central location was transformed into an ensemble of thematic exhibit spaces representing the diversity of research conducted across our Seven Faculties and various Research Units, Centres and Institutes. The main Expo included attractive and engaging exhibits, experiments, demonstrations and interactive displays, among many more exciting activities.Guided tours for secondary school groups are available upon request and bookings can be made by clicking HERE.

 

Mini Workshops

UWI St. Augustine Lecture Halls & Rooms,
3rd to 4th October, 2013 (10:00am-4:00pm)

student1A wide range of mini-workshops hosted by the Faculties and research Units across the Campus presented unique, hands-on learning opportunities for visitors to the Research Expo. There were a wide range of topics to choose from including Renewable Energy Application, Understanding 4G networks, Chinese Business Etiquette, Targeting Dementia, Energy Management Issues, Street Children, and Steelband workshops, among many others. Each mini-Workshop lasted approximately 45-minutes and was a very engaging and interactive learning experience.

UWI Market Place & Kids Fun Park

This event brought together learning and family entertainment as everyone got the opportunity to participate in UWI research at our Market Place and Kids Fun Park. Whether it was by interacting with traditional carnival characters, listening to Caribbean folk tales, enjoying a mini-concert put on by students from our Department for Creative and Festival Arts, taking part in a SPEC sports challenge, learning about life sciences at the petting zoo area or sampling products from our Cocoa Research Centre and University Field Station, everyone had the opportunity to learn something new about the UWI and to discover that there is a researcher in each one of us.
