Deadlock: Ethnicity and Electoral Competition in Trinidad and Tobago 1995-2002

Author

Selwyn Ryan

Synopsis

This book chronicles and analyses the political and electoral events of 1995-2002 and also examines the case for and against power sharing in the context of Trinidad and Tobago. It concludes with the view that while constitutional and electoral reform are urgently required, and power sharing an idea whose time may well have come, that there are dimensions of the political culture which would have made the experiment fail in the atmosphere that followed the 18-18 tie. A political hug between Mr. Manning and Mr. Panday might have been historically necessary, but was sociologically and politically impossible. The embrace would have been fatal. The society was not yet ripe for the revolution that such power sharing involved.
