Ethnic Minorities in Caribbean Society

Author

Rhoda E. Reddock

Synopsis

This book encompasses four of the ethno/historical case studies of ethnic minorities in the Commonwealth Caribbean. The groups studied are the Amerindians of Guyana, the Caribs of Karifuna of Dominica, the Chinese of Jamaica and the Sindhis and Gujaratis of Barbados. These studies are in-depth analyses derived from ethnographic and socio-historical research on previously under-research communities within the Caribbean region.

All of the studies grapple with the ways in which these groups have sought to establish themselves within the dominant (although fractured) Creole cultures of the region and the contradictions and collaborations which have resulted. Special emphasis had been placed in these on intra-group and inter-group relations within the respective countries as well as other social, political, cultural and gendered aspects of their existence.
