Student Employment

UWI-Temps

Who can participate? All students

This programme is geared towards providing part time employment during the semester on and/or off campus based on the availability of jobs.  It includes jobs such as working for registration, ushering for graduation as well as data entry. 

Application forms are available online as well as at the Office during the early part of Semester 1 of each academic year. 


VACATION EMPLOYMENT

Who can participate? All Students (except final year students)

Students are placed in jobs both on and off campus based on the demand by employers.  Application forms are available online from the beginning of Semester II of the academic year.  Priority is given to needy students. Please note that final year students will not be considered for this programme.


GRADUATE EMPLOYMENT

Who can participate? Final year students only

This programme is designed to assist final year students in securing internship / employment with leading companies in corporate Trinidad and Tobago and the CARICOM Region. It is part of the WOW programme and students must submit their resumes through that programme to be considered. SAS would assist students in finding their first job only. Resumes are sent to requesting employers.

Submission of a resume to Student Advisory Services is NOT a guarantee of employment.

CARICOM Nationals who wish to work in Trinidad and Tobago can also visit our office to collect relevant documents to apply for the certificate. Interested persons MUST be in possession of an undergraduate degree to be eligible for the certificate.

 

Career Programmes

CAREER ADVICE PROGRAMME

Who can participate? All students

CAP is designed to provide information and advice to students from year one to final year on Career Planning and Career Guidance via workshops. CAP workshops are individualized and tailored to meet the needs of students. These workshops will be conducted in the first semester of the academic year and registration takes place at the Office of Student Advisory Services.

Included in the Career Advice Programme is a computer based programme “System of Interactive Guidance and Information –Sigi 13” which is geared towards assisting students to identify careers which is best suited to their interests, abilities and values.  It also acts as an aid in understanding the dimensions of different jobs. This facility is available at the Career Builder Room, Office of Student Advisory Services and can be accessed during the hours of 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.



INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEWS

Who can participate? All students

This innovative programme provides our students with relevant career possibilities by interacting with practicing professionals in their respective fields. This in-depth one-on-one programme allows students to gain insights to the work environment and to the scope of their career possibilities.


THE WORLD OF WORK (WOW)

Who can participate? Final year students only ( 1st and 2nd year students interested in Vacation Employment opportunities are invited to only attend the 1st day of the WOW Recruitment Fair.)

The World of Work programme (WOW) is an initiative by Student Advisory Services and UWI Alumni Association geared towards preparing UWI Graduates with the necessary tools needed for life after graduation, preparing them for the world of work. The programme entails six sessions consisting of:

 

Resume Writing


This workshop prepares students for the world of work by educating students in the process of writing their resumes.  Students receive information on the different types of resumes and the essential features of each type. 

WOW Seminar

  • This seminar has two main presentations

    1. Interview Skills

    This session highlights the steps needed in preparation for interviews.  It includes grooming, dress, preparing possible responses, attitudes and behaviors that would assist students in performing well at interviews.

    1. Becoming an Entrepreneur

    The second presentation is geared towards all students who are considering the possibility of getting into their own business.  The presenters share their experiences and show some of the “do’s and don’ts” in establishing a successful business. It points participants to different sources of information to assist them in becoming successful entrepreneurs.

Professional Etiquette & Grooming Workshop

This session helps to prepare students for the working world by showing them the etiquette dress, behavior, attitudes and manners that are required in the workplace, including etiquette required at social gatherings.

WOW Mock Interview Session

This is a highly interactive event where students are given the opportunity by liaising with various representatives from corporate Trinidad.   The panelists provide immediate written feedback after the interview.   

 

WOW Recruitment Fair

Companies from various industries are invited to recruit students for either vacation or graduate employment.

  • Vacation Employment targets returning students only.
  • Graduate Employment targets Final year students only.

UWI COOPERATIVE TRAINING PROGRAMME

Who can participate? Students who have successfully completed the 2nd year of their degree programme.

The Cooperative Training Programme is geared towards providing students with the opportunity to acquire structured exposure to the world of work. It facilitates the linkage between classroom theory and the realities in the workplace. The programme would involve attachments with various companies for a one-year period.

During this period students are not expected to attend classes, tutorials, labs or write exams. You will be paid during the duration of the programme and will still have access to the campus facilities.
