About Us

The Sustainable Economic Development Unit (SEDU) was launched on October 19th 1996. SEDU’s mission is “to conduct empirical and theoretical research and facilitate interdisciplinary work on the most promising policies for Sustainable Economic Development in Small Island Developing States (SIDS)”.
The approach of the unit is policy oriented, its focus is on the wider Caribbean region, and its aim is to contribute to the understanding of sustainable development through rigorous, regional research and the dissemination of such research results. In fulfillment of this mission, our core areas of research are:

• Determination of Priority Areas in the Promotion of Sustainable Economic Development in SIDS;

• Sustainable Tourism in Small Islands;

• Sustainable Human Development/Sustainable Livelihoods;
• Community Participation in Project Evaluation and Decision-making;

• Economic Valuation;

• Social, Environmental and SD Impact Assessment;

• Policy Instruments for Sustainable Economic Development;

• Vulnerability and the Adaptation to Natural Disasters and Climate Change in SIDS; and

• Trade and the Environment.

SEDU is coordinated by Professor Dennis Pantin (Dennis.Pantin@sta.uwi.edu), Head Department of Economics, The University of the West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago. Other core members of the SEDU team are:
