UWI Telehealth 6th Year Highlights

SIXTH YEAR HIGHLIGHTS Sept. 2009 – Sept. 2010

 

ATLANTIC has generously supported The UWI Telehealth Programme which has contributed to the management of complex clinical problems in children whose families could not afford to access treatment. It has also broadened the scope of delivery of health care locally & regionally by providing continuing medical education and support to many doctors through  modern real-time videoconferencing technology.  This Programme has benefited over 150 families, conducted 146 clinical consultations from which 14 children received free surgeries at SickKids Hospital, Toronto, Canada.  These surgeries, sponsored by the Herbie Fund, have resulted in a cost saving of approximately US$ 903,280.00.

Major achievements over the past year include:

  • 21 consultations with three (3) children accepted for surgery sponsored by the Herbie Fund.
  • An initiative with SickKids Hospital to develop capacity in the management of childhood cancers in Trinidad & Tobago.
  • Training of 12 health care providers using distance learning methodology from the University of Washington, Seattle, USA.
  • Handover and use of the videoconferencing facility at the San Fernando General Hospital – a collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other international partners.
  • The impetus for the development of a Caribbean Partnership in Paediatric Cancer and Blood Disorder.
  • The hosting of two (2) internees as part of ATLANTIC’s “World of Work” initiative.
  • Research presentations at scientific conferences.
  • Awards: June 2010 - Trinidad and Tobago Medical Association Award for “Recent innovation in Medicine: Tele Medicine “
  • August 31st - Chaconia Medal Silver, for long and meritorious service to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in the sphere of medicine.
