“I have so many favourite memories…Like waking up every morning to the smiling face of my youngest son and to the burst of happiness, energy and life that is his nature, the enormous talent of my middle son, the exquisite intelligence and sensitivity of my oldest, and the rock steadiness of my husband…Walking through the underground passages at MIT with my best friend and wondering what life would unfold for us; or stepping onto the tarmac in St. Kitts and remembering, again, how it feels to be nearer to the heavens. The most recent would be when I was at the peak of Whistler Mountain in Vancouver, immediately adjacent to a sign that read “Cliff” and received a phone call from the Campus Principal confirming whether I would accept the appointment of Head of Department! My teaching and research interests all centre around regionally-appropriate intervention themes…UWI has become for me a true symbol of the Caribbean.”

PROFILE

Kim Mallalieu completed her BS Electrical Engineering at Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1982; her MS Optics at the University of Rochester’s Institute of Optics in 1983; and her PhD Electrical Engineering at University College London in 1987. She joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of the West Indies in 1987 and is currently Department Head. Dr. Mallalieu led the development of UWI’s Master’s degree in Regulation and Policy in Telecommunications. This MRP (Telecommunications), St. Augustine’s first online programme, has been delivered to professionals from over 30 developing countries. She is an active member of Diálogo Regional sobre Sociedad de la Información (DIRSI), a Latin American and Caribbean network of academics engaged in research on ICT policy and regulatory intervention for social inclusion. Dr. Mallalieu has served on boards and councils such as that of the Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago and the International Journal of Electrical Engineering Education. She has been invited to author many book chapters and deliver keynote addresses at home and abroad. Dr. Mallalieu is the recipient of local, regional and international teaching awards as well as other awards of distinction. She is a Fulbright Fellow and has served as Visiting Scientist at MIT on different occasions.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Dr. Mallalieu’s research interests are multidisciplinary, predominantly revolving around innovative, regionally appropriate technologies in support of social development, with emphasis on a variety of traditionally excluded populations in Trinidad and Tobago as well as in the Caribbean region at large. Specific focal points for such research include culturally appropriate telecommunications technologies as well as wireless networks and technologies for poverty alleviation. Her research interests extend to matters relating to technology policy and regulatory intervention as enablers for social inclusion and national development. Dr. Mallalieu has longstanding research interests in innovative, regionally appropriate technology-enabled pedagogy; learning systems and organizational effectiveness.
