“The external examiner for my PhD at Warwick University had the reputation of being an exceptional taskmaster. However, after my viva, which blissfully lasted around fifteen minutes, Professor Rugman looked me squarely in the eyes and said, “You did not get the skills to do such excellent work here. You came with them.” I think that this is a fitting tribute to my lecturers in the Economics Department at The UWI St. Augustine campus. I was a faculty member at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands from 1998 to 2002. I decided to leave my tenured position and return to the West Indies - a move I have never regretted. I believe that the Caribbean is a fertile seed-bed for research activity, and UWI is an excellent base from which to conduct this research.”

PROFILE

Lou Anne Barclay, who joined the Department of Management Studies in 2002, is currently a Senior Lecturer at the department, specialising in International Business. Her work has appeared in journals as diverse as Oxford Development Studies, European Journal of Development Studies, African Development Review and Social and Economic Studies. Dr. Barclay won The Principal’s Research Award for The Most Outstanding Researcher in the Faculty of Social Sciences in 2006. This award, however, is not the first public recognition of her research abilities. Her work has been described “setting new standards for research work on economics of developing nations” by the esteemed Professor Alan Rugman in his 2006 article entitled, “Multinational enterprise strategy for developing countries”. She has participated in conferences at the Harvard Business School, United Nations Centre for Trade and Development and other leading institutes.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Dr. Barclay’s research interests are related to firm, industry and country competitiveness in developing economies. She has conducted research and published widely on issues including FDI-facilitated development, the corporate strategies of multinational firms in Caribbean economies, the development of sound national systems of innovation in developing countries andthe competitiveness of locally-owned firms in the Caribbean. Dr. Barclay is currently involved in a research project that examines the issues of institutional efficiency and FDI-faciliated development. This research is ground-breaking since it will be the first study that links the success of FDI-faciliated development in the resource sector of developing economies to the quality of their institutions.
