Education Programmes


The major thrust of the School of Education is the improvement of teacher education and educational research and development in Trinidad & Tobago and in the region served by the University. The School provides professional training and development for caregivers, educators, education administrators and policy makers. It therefore provides human resource development for the early childhood care, primary, secondary and tertiary sub-sectors of the education system.

Degree Programmes

  • Bachelor of Education (B Ed) Early Childhood Care & Education
  • Bachelor of Education (B Ed) In-Service Primary Education-General*
    *This is a 2-year, full time programme for teachers employed in primary schools within Trinidad & Tobago. It includes 2 online courses conducted over a 6-week period between July and August.
B.Ed. In-Service Primary (General)

The full-time programme targets teachers who are employed in primary schools within Trinidad and Tobago and who possess:

·         A Teacher’s Diploma - Duration: Two years.

OR

·        Minimum of 5 CSEC (CXC) passes General Proficiency Subjects (Grades1 or 2 pre-1998 and Grades 1, 2 or 3 from June 1998) including English Language, Mathematics and a Science, and passes in 2 CAPE subjects

OR

·        Minimum of 5 CSEC (CXC) passes General Proficiency Subjects(Grades1 or 2 pre-1998 and Grades 1, 2 or 3 from June 1998) including English Language, Mathematics and a Science and evidence of active participation in continuous professional development courses. Interview is compulsory.

OR

·        Must be employed in a primary school within Trinidad and Tobago or provide evidence of having access to a primary school for the duration of the programme through a written letter of support from the relevant School Principal

 

B.Ed. In Early Childhood Care And Education
  1. Minimum of 5 CSEC (CXC) passes General Proficiency Subjects (Grades1 or 2 pre-1998 and Grades 1, 2 or 3 from June 1998) including English Language and Mathematics.

AND

  1. A Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education/ Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCE/ECCD) from an approved Teacher’s Training College.
  2. Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education/ Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCE/ECCD).
  3. Professional experience as a teacher that is deemed satisfactory by the Faculty.

 

Diploma & Certificate Programmes


Diploma in Health Visiting

Health visiting is an evolving field built on the foundation of basic nursing and midwifery education. Health visitors work towards improving and enhancing public health, with the focus of their work being preventative healthcare. The Health Visiting education programme prepares students to deliver specialised health care to the client utilising principles of research, epidemiology, teaching, management, growth and development and counselling. Sponsored by the Ministry of Health, this programme provides advanced training for health practitioners who want to work in the area of Health Visiting or persons already employed in the field.

 

Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Development

The Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Development Programme is offered as a One year full-time Teacher Training programme (evenings) with a strong focus on Community - Based Learning, for caregivers in early childhood settings who possess:

  1. Minimum of 5 CSEC (CXC) passes General Proficiency Subjects (Grades1 or 2 pre-1998 and Grades 1, 2 or 3 from June 1998) or GCE O’Level subjects (Grades A – C) including English Language and Mathematics.
  2. A Police Certificate of Good Character (not older than three (3) months).
