This week, we will explore exemplary learning outcomes. Learning outcomes are the foundations upon which all other course elements are built, and are therefore quite important in effective teaching and learning in any context or mode of delivery (face-to-face, online or blended).<\/span><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>A \u2013 What is a Learning Outcome?<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000;line-height: 1.5\">A learning outcome (LO) may be defined as the knowledge, skills, or attitudes your learners acquire as a result of participating in your course or lesson. More specifically, learning outcomes are statements indicating the end result for a learner following a course or learning activity. It specifies what you can observe the learner do after a learning experience\/activity.<\/span><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\"> For this reason, learning outcomes should focus on:<\/span><\/h5>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\">The result of the learning experiences<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\">The essential knowledge, skills and attitudes<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\">The desired end of the learning experience (not the means or the process)<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\">The basic performance tenets that must be satisfied to successfully complete your course or programme<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\">Answering the question: \u201cWhy should a student do this course?\u201d or \u201cWhy is your course important?\u201d or, \u201cWhat will a learner gain by completing your course?\u201d<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>B \u2013 The Essential Features of a Learning Outcome<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000;line-height: 1.5\">The essential features of a learning outcome may be encapsulated in an acronym. An exemplary learning outcome is a <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>S.M.A.R.T.<\/strong><\/span> learning outcome. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;line-height: 1.5\"><strong>S.M.A.R.T.<\/strong><\/span> is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. When setting learning outcomes, it&#8217;s important to make them SMART. This ensures that your learning outcomes are clear, focused, and achievable. Here&#8217;s what each of the letters in <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>S.M.A.R.T.<\/strong><\/span> stands for:<\/span><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000;line-height: 1.5\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Specific:<\/strong><\/span> The outcome should be clear and specific, with no room for interpretation or confusion. It should answer the questions: What do I want to achieve? Why is it important? Who is involved?<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000;line-height: 1.5\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Measurable:<\/strong><\/span> The outcome should be measurable so that progress can be tracked and evaluated. It should answer the question: How will I know when I have achieved it?<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000;line-height: 1.5\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Achievable: <\/strong><\/span>The outcome should be realistic and achievable, given the available resources, time, and skills. It should answer the question: Is it possible to achieve?<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000;line-height: 1.5\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Relevant:<\/strong><\/span> The outcome should be relevant to the learner&#8217;s goals and interests, as well as the broader context of the learning program. It should answer the question: Why is it relevant and meaningful to me?<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000;line-height: 1.5\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Time-bound: <\/strong><\/span>The outcome should have a clear timeframe for achievement, which helps to focus the learner&#8217;s efforts and provides a sense of urgency. It should answer the question: When will I achieve it?<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>C \u2013 Tips for Creating Exemplary Learning Outcomes <\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000;line-height: 1.5\">There are several approaches one may take in creating exemplary learning outcomes (e.g. the ABC method, a formulaic approach). Whatever approach is used, it is important that your learning outcomes are clear, succinct, specific and most of all, measurable. The following are five tips you should consider as you create your exemplary learning outcomes:<\/span><\/h5>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\">Start with the handle \u201cBy the end of this session, you\/students will be able to\u2026\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">This establishes a student centred approach by establishing the basic skills, knowledge and emotions a learner will develop after a learning experience.<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\">Each learning outcome should start with a verb.<\/span><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\">This verb must be an observable action i.e. a measurable form of behaviour<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\">Use one verb per learning outcome:<\/span><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\">Multiple verbs in a single learning outcome makes it immeasurable.<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\">Include one task per outcome:<\/span><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\">This makes the learning outcome very specific and measurable<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\">Use a range of verbs in a list of learning outcomes:<\/span><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\">Use verbs from different levels of thinking (e.g. create, apply, identify)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\">Using the aforementioned, the following are exemplary learning outcomes:<\/span><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\">By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:<\/span><\/h5>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Assess <\/strong><\/span>the various measures of flood prevention <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>in the Caribbean<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Describe<\/strong><\/span> case studies of flood prevention among <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Caribbean territories<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Apply<\/strong><\/span> methods of flood prevention <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>in a local community<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>D \u2013 Helpful Resources on Learning Outcomes<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000;line-height: 1.5\">The following are a few resources that may help you in creating exemplary learning outcomes.
