Keynote Speaker: Guy Deslauriers
Born in Aubagne, in the South of France, Guy Deslauriers demonstrates an early passion for cinema: while still at secondary school, he goes quite often to Fort-de-France in Martinique to learn about cinema. In 1982, he works as the assistant director for Euzhan Palcy’s film La Rue Cases Nègres. He settles in Paris in 1983 and is an assistant-director for various films till 1987 when he directs his first short film Quiproquo. Since then, Deslauriers has directed several short and long films including documentaries: Raphaël Elizé, 1995; Les Oubliés de la liberté, 1989; Sorciers, 1992, among others. L’Exil du roi Béhanzin, his first long film was selected for numerous film festivals and has obtained several prizes. Le Passage du milieu (another full-length film) was also selected in several international film festivals (Toronto, Sundance). Patrick Chamoiseau has written the scripts of several films of Deslauriers (L’exil du Roi Béhanzin, 1993; Le Passage du milieu, 1999; Edouard Glissant, un siècle d’écrivains, 1996; Biguine, 2004; and more recently André Aliker, 2009).
