Context and Background
Trinidad and Tobago’s population is ageing rapidly and faces a high burden of chronic, age-related disease, while the health workforce has limited specialist geriatric training. An Advanced Certificate in Geriatric Nursing is urgently needed to equip nurses with the assessment, prevention, management and care coordination skills required to improve older adults’ health outcomes, relieve pressure on acute services, and support family-centered long-term care.
Learning Outcomes for the Workshop
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the demographic transition of population and its implications for health services.
2. Explain ageing and ageing process.
3. Provide high quality evidence-based nursing care to older persons and their families including the underprivileged and disabled using nursing process.
4. Communicate effectively, respectfully and compassionately with older adults and their families.
5. Perform assessment of functional, physical, cognitive, psychological, social and spiritual status of older persons by using appropriate tools.
6. Manage common health problems of older persons, including geriatric syndromes.
7. Identify the pharmaco dynamics and pharmacokinetics related to common drugs used in disease condition of older persons.
8. Provide culturally appropriate end of life care to older persons.
9. Identify the research priorities in gerontological nursing for evidence-based practice & to conduct research
10. Integrate evidence-based nursing practice to plan, deliver, and evaluate geriatric healthcare services while ensuring person-centred care.
