This elective course starts by identifying the characteristics of digital projects, comparing and differentiating them from other project types with continued reference to the overarching project management body of knowledge, its principles, disciplines and processes. Next, core concepts are defined, including the differences between Digitisation, Digitalisation and Digital Transformation. Students are then introduced to a range of digital project management frameworks, focusing on the two (2) core methodologies for the management and delivery of digital projects:
-
-
- Waterfall – The traditional linear approach including variations of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) that is derived from this
- Agile – Incremental delivery and the full range of Agile methodologies, with emphasis on Scrum for operationalising digital project delivery
-
Having established students’ understanding of the core frameworks, a variety of hybrid approaches are considered. Included in all methodologies is the application to digital projects, of the seven (7) Project Management Institute (PMI) project management disciplines – Integration Management, Time and Cost Management, Quality Management, Resource Management, Communications Management, Risk Management and Procurement Management. Application of the theoretical frameworks and methodologies follows. This provides guidance on current best practices as well as issues, in the operational aspects of digital project delivery – Tools & Techniques, Governance, Ownership, (Virtual) Project Team Organisation & Team Dynamics, The (Virtual) Project Management Office (PMO), Business Process Optimisation, Scenarios & Issues
