FREN 2605 The French Novel in the 19th Century

A close reading of texts that reflect the Romantic, Realist and naturalist movements in a century of rapid literary change. Authors to be studied include Balzac and Flaubert with excerpts from the works of Stendhal and Zola.

Method of Instruction: 2 lectures and 1 tutorial per week

Assessment: 40% in-course assessment (2 coursework assignments- 30% and 1 exposé/class participation - 10%), 60% final examination
