The programme in Film recognizes the importance of thought and analysis to the creation of innovative film art. This has been the experience in Soviet cinema, in French cinema and in Cuban cinema, to name three among nations who have successfully produced strong film industries. The programme recognizes also that filmmakers throughout the Caribbean region need to be provided with the necessary expertise and skills to ensure their competitiveness in the burgeoning international film industry.<\/p>\n

This programme is designed to ensure that those who make films have the theoretical knowledge, critical judgment and the technical skills necessary for the creation of a strong indigenous film industry. Film Studies is an interdisciplinary academic field that focuses on the analysis and interpretation of motion pictures. At the UWI Film Programme, the Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies provides students with the chance to study alongside world renowned researchers and academics often with a focus on the Caribbean region, Latin America and other emerging cinemas from the Global South . Throughout the programme, they will learn about the history of cinema, film theory and criticism, and the ways in which film directly impacts and shapes society. The goal of a film studies degree is to develop critical thinking and analytical skills, enabling students to understand and evaluate the role of film in society and culture. Graduates of a film studies program may find careers in film criticism, film journalism, film production, and film education.<\/p>\n

Film Production is the process of creating a motion picture, from the idea or concept to the finished product that is ready for public exhibition. At the UWI Film Programme, the BA in Film Production offers students the opportunity to collaborate with multiple artists and technicians to bring the story to life through writing, casting, filming, editing, sound design, music, special effects and post-production. Our film production degree covers subjects such as screenwriting, cinematography, sound design, editing, lighting, production design, and directing. The goal of a film production degree is to produce a visually and auditory appealing work that will entertain and engage an audience. Graduates of a film production degree program may find careers as directors, producers, cinematographers, screenwriters, editors, and other professionals working in the film and television industries.<\/p>\n
