FHE’s Journey Through Time<\/h1>\n

The Faculty of Humanities and Education came into being on August 1, 1996, and comprises the School of Humanities (formerly the Faculty of Arts and General Studies) and the School of Education (formerly the Faculty of Education). The Faculty of Humanities and Education embodies the School of Education, the Centre for Language Learning, and the Departments of Creative and Festival Arts; History; Literary, Cultural and Communication Studies; Modern Languages and Linguistics, and the Seminary and, under the Dean’s Office, the Film Programme.<\/p>\n

The University of the West Indies expanded with the establishment of a College of Arts and Science at the Cave Hill Campus. At the St. Augustine Campus, the College of Arts and Science was also established on the site of what had originally been the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture.<\/span><\/p>\n

A system of Challenge Examinations was introduced, in which students from non-Campus countries who fulfilled the University\u2019s matriculation requirements could pursue all or some courses of the first year of the B.A. degree programme in their home country. Successful students could then apply for entry to complete the B.A. degree at any of the three UWI Campuses. The system of Challenge Examinations was later absorbed by the University Distance Teaching Enterprise (UWIDITE).<\/p>\n

The Faculty of Arts and General Studies and the Faculty of Education were joined together to form the Faculty of Humanities and Education (FHE). The FHE was made up of two Schools; School of Humanities and School of Education. The Faculty offered both Bachelor of Arts degrees and Bachelor of Education degrees.<\/p>\n

UWIDITE evolved into the University Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC).<\/p>\n
