Nyoni Winchester DVM. MVS. is a first-generation Veterinarian currently working in academia as an Instructor in the School of Veterinary Medicine at St. George’s University (SGU), Grenada (2021). During the three years at SGU, Dr. Winchester teaches large animal clinical skills to aspiring vet students. She also delivers lectures in livestock production, reproduction and nutrition and is involved in the outreach committee providing ambulatory services to livestock farmers in Grenada.
Dr. Winchester obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from the St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies (2015). She is a proud alumnus of the New Zealand Aid Development Scholarship (NZAID), where she obtained her Master’s in Veterinary Studies (MVS) degree from Massey University (2019). At present, she is pursuing a Master’s in Public Health (MPH), Global Health Track, at SGU.
In her early career, Dr. Winchester held the position Veterinary Officer within the Animal Health Unit of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) (2015). Her duties included the management of livestock husbandry systems and the control and prevention of livestock diseases. Subsequently, Dr. Winchester was appointed the Veterinary Scientist with the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) and the Officer in charge of the Tobago Unit (2017). Dr. Winchester led a team whose responsibilities included but were not limited to the research and development of sustainable agriculture practices for improving small ruminant production in the region.
As a CCH Fellow, Dr. Winchester is determined to make a positive impact while adopting a one health approach to advocate the effect of climate change on animal and human health and the regional food security. With this opportunity, she aspires to enable strategies for health promotion in the region. Her enthusiasm for nature, her love for hiking and her diverse cultural experiences from travelling have heavily influenced her aspirations.
