Christine Samwaroo is an Intersectional Climate and Caribbean Feminist. She is the Founder and Managing Director of The Breadfruit Collective, a Gender and Environmental Justice organisation based in Guyana. The Breadfruit Collective’s mission is to enable persons to understand that to have a functioning society, there must be a positive relationship with women, girls and the environment. Christine co-authored a children's book on climate change and health called 'The Sprouts and the Mystery of the Flood'.
Previously, she served as a Senior Environmental Officer with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Additionally, she has experience working with indigenous communities, government offices and citizens across Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana having worked as a Project Officer for the World Wildlife Fund Guianas (WWF Guianas) to phase out the use of mercury in artisanal and small-scale gold mining.
Prior to returning to Guyana in 2018, Christine was heavily involved in Climate Advocacy and Environmental Education in New York City, working with the Climate Museum, City Parks Foundation, Tishman Environment and Design Center (TEDC) and the Sierra Club.
Christine worked as the Programme Coordinator and Mentor under the GirlsCARE Jamaica Young Women's Climate Change Programme. Christine was selected to lead as Co-Chair for the Gender Working Group 2022-2023. She is currently the Co-Chair for the Human Rights and Equity Working Group as part of the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute - CANARI's Caribbean Climate Justice Alliance. Annually, Christine Co coordinates the Caribbean Women for Climate Justice (CW4CJ) conference. Most recently, Christine supported the planning and execution of the inaugural Climate Justice Camp- Caribbean Edition, an initiative by Greenpeace which attracted over one hundred and twenty participants from across the French, Dutch, Spanish and English Caribbean. Christine has a Master's Degree in Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management from The New School.
