Message from the Director

 A bit about us…

The School of Dentistry is one of the five schools in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, the others being the schools of medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy and advanced nursing. We are a dynamic dental school, offering a five-year program leading to the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS), a one-year vocational training program currently required by the Dental Council of Trinidad and Tobago for those wishing to be registered with the Council, and a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency program in collaboration with the Lutheran Medical Center in New York which is the only program accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation outside the United States.  The School of Dentistry also offers a two-year dental hygiene and therapy program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree.  Certificate programs in special needs and dental laboratory technology are being planned.  The School of Dentistry is currently developing dental specialty programs in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics, and Pediatric Dentistry.

The School of Dentistry is undergoing a major expansion and refurbishment of its facilities.  When completed, the current annual intake of 30-35 students from Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean, and from other countries will increase to 60-70 students.  Since its inception in 1989, the School of Dentistry has enrolled 587 students. Thirty-one percent of these are overseas candidates hailing from the Bahamas, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Suriname, the UK, the US, Canada, and Botswana.  With the expansion, it is estimated that the total number of overseas students will increase to 60-70%.  In addition, the School of Dentistry hopes to become far more active in providing continuing professional education, distance learning opportunities, and clinical services to the profession throughout the region.

Our Staff

The full-time, academic staff of the School of Dentistry is international in character.  Further, clinical instruction is supported by highly experienced, leading dental practitioners in the country who work on a part-time basis.  In addition, the School of Dentistry routinely invites internationally-renowned faculty from around the world to present lectures and short courses to students, interns, residents, faculty, and private practitioners.  This is a successful model as it bridges the gap between academic learning and general and specialist dental practice requirements. Furthermore, students enjoy a close interactive relationship with the staff in their didactic and clinical learning experiences, made possible through approximately 25,000 patient visits each year.

Our Graduates

The School of Dentistry’s graduates are highly successful in their academic and professional endeavours. Over the years, many of our graduates have obtained their medical degrees from The University of the West Indies or post-graduate qualifications from the UK and USA, meritoriously in almost all major specialties of dentistry, many with distinctions and honors. Several have obtained Fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons of the UK (FDSRCS) or have obtained MRCS in General Surgery in preparation for the FRCS in General Surgery.

The School of Dentistry serves as a training/examination center for membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MFDSRCS).  Our graduates have pass rates equal to those from Great Britain.  Several of our graduates have completed their residency programs at the Lutheran Medical Center.  These achievements are an indication of the quality of education that our CAAM-HP and ADACODA accredited School of Dentistry provides.
